The Pearl Brewery closed in 2001 and reopened over the following decade as a mixed district of restaurants, apartments, a hotel in the old brewhouse and a campus of the Culinary Institute of America. It is the most convincing piece of adaptive reuse in the city, and the Saturday and Sunday farmers market is a genuine local one rather than a staged attraction. It sits at the northern end of the River Walk's Museum Reach, so the walk down to downtown is the obvious way to arrive or leave.
