Varhegy, or Castle Hill, is a must-see spot in Budapest, blending history, architecture, and amazing views. It’s part of the Budapest UNESCO World Heritage site and is the medieval heart of the city.
History
Varhegy’s history goes back to the 14th century when King Béla IV built a fortified shelter after the Mongol invasion. Over time, it was shaped by different rulers like the Ottomans and the Habsburgs, each leaving their architectural mark. The castle was rebuilt in Baroque style between 1714 and 1723 and saw major reconstruction after World War II.
Getting There
Visitors can reach Varhegy by taking the funicular from the Chain Bridge, which links the hill to Pest. Walking up from St. George Square is also a scenic choice.
