Cathedral de Santiago Antigua is a fascinating historical site in Antigua, Guatemala. Here’s a quick guide to help plan a visit:
The cathedral’s first construction started in 1545 using materials from a destroyed settlement. Due to frequent earthquakes, it underwent several reconstructions. The third and final version, completed in 1680, was crafted by master Joseph de Porres. After the 1773 earthquakes, it suffered severe damage and was eventually moved to Guatemala City.
Fly into Guatemala City and take a shuttle or private transport to Antigua. Once there, the cathedral is easy to reach on foot, thanks to its central square location.
Visiting the cathedral remains and nearby areas is usually free, though some historical sites might charge an entrance fee.
