Dalt Vila: The Walled Old Town of Ibiza

Dalt Vila, meaning "upper town", is the fortified old quarter that rises above Ibiza Town's harbour. It is the island's most important historic site and part of the UNESCO World Heritage listing "Ibiza, Biodiversity and Culture". If your picture of Ibiza is only beach clubs and superclubs, an evening here will change it.

The massive walls you see today were built in the 16th century to protect the town from pirate raids and Ottoman attack, and they are among the best-preserved Renaissance fortifications in the Mediterranean. Inside, a maze of steep cobbled lanes, whitewashed houses and small squares climbs to the cathedral at the very top.

• Portal de ses Taules: the grand main gate with its drawbridge ramp, the classic way in from the market area below.
• The walls and bastions: walk along the ramparts for views across the harbour, the marina and, on clear days, towards Formentera.
• Ibiza Cathedral: the cathedral of Santa María crowns the hill. The square outside is the highest point of the old town.
• Plaça de Vila: a lively square just inside the walls, lined with restaurants, galleries and bars.

• Wear comfortable shoes. The lanes are steep and the cobbles are slippery.
• Go in the late afternoon or early evening, when the heat drops and the light over the port is at its best.
• It is free to walk around the old town, though individual museums and sites may charge.
• Combine it with the Puig des Molins necropolis, a short walk away, to see the other half of the UNESCO site.

Getting There

Dalt Vila is in the centre of Ibiza Town, directly above the port. From the harbour or the Vara de Rey boulevard, it is a few minutes' walk to the main gate. Parking near the top is very limited, so walking up is the best option.
