Built in 1910 by a Japanese American architect, with one of the last intact Japanese bathhouses in the country in the basement. When Executive Order 9066 sent Seattle's Japanese American community to the camps in 1942, families stored their belongings here. Some were never collected, and those trunks and suitcases are still in the basement — visible through a glass panel set into the tea room floor. It is a National Historic Landmark, it serves tea, and it is the quietest and heaviest room in Seattle.
