Torre des Savinar: The Clifftop Tower Facing Es Vedrà

Torre des Savinar is an old defensive watchtower perched on the cliffs of Ibiza's southwest coast, near Cala d'Hort in the municipality of Sant Josep. It was built in the 18th century as part of a chain of towers that watched the coast for pirate ships. Today most people make the trip for the view: the tower looks straight out across the water to Es Vedrà, the dramatic rocky islet that is one of the most photographed sights in Ibiza.

Es Vedrà

Es Vedrà rises steeply out of the sea just off the coast, together with its smaller neighbour Es Vedranell. The islets are uninhabited and protected as a nature reserve, and they have attracted legends for centuries, from sirens to claims of strange magnetic energy. Whatever you make of the myths, the sight of Es Vedrà at sunset is unforgettable.

Visiting the Tower

The tower is reached on foot along a rough dirt track from the road above Cala d'Hort. The walk is short but uneven and steep in places, so wear proper shoes rather than flip-flops. Google currently lists the tower itself as temporarily closed, so do not count on going inside. The clifftop around it, and the views of Es Vedrà, are what most visitors come for.

The path continues down towards Sa Pedrera de Cala d'Hort, the old quarry often called Atlantis, which makes a good combined visit for experienced walkers.

Tips for Visiting

  • Go for sunset, when the sun drops behind Es Vedrà, and bring a torch for the walk back.
  • Avoid the midday heat in summer. There is no shade and no water on the trail.
  • Keep well back from the cliff edges, which are unfenced.
  • Parking at the start of the track is limited, so arrive early at busy times.
