Situated in the heart of the city, the São Paulo Cathedral, also known as Catedral da Sé, is one of São Paulo’s most impressive landmarks. This monumental neo-gothic cathedral is a testament to faith and art in the city center, a must-see for anyone visiting São Paulo, Brazil.

History

The construction of the current cathedral started in 1913 and took four decades to complete. It was designed by the German architect Maximilian Emil Hehl, who incorporated both Renaissance and Gothic architectural styles. The cathedral replaced an older structure that had stood on the grounds since the mid-16th century.

How to Get There

The cathedral is located in the Praça da Sé, the very center of São Paulo. It is easily accessible by metro, with the Sé station located just a few steps away. There are also numerous bus lines that stop near the square.

Attractions

The cathedral itself, with its stained-glass windows and detailed stonework, is stunning. A visit to the cathedral’s crypt, which contains the tombs of several significant figures in the history of São Paulo, is also of interest. Other places of interest near the cathedral include the Pátio do Colégio, the location of the founding of São Paulo, and the Municipal Theatre.

Ticket Information

Visiting the main body of São Paulo Cathedral is free, but there is a small charge (R$7) to visit the crypt. There are also guided tours of the cathedral and the crypt available for a small fee.

Tips for Visiting
