Posted by Brandon B.AdminOpened in 1911 and modelled on the Paris Opera, paid for by coffee money at the height of the boom. Its place in Brazilian history is the Semana de Arte Moderna of February 1922, when Mario de Andrade, Villa-Lobos and Anita Malfatti staged the week that announced modernism in Brazil and were heckled for it. The interior is marble, mosaic and gilt. Guided tours run on weekdays, and the resident orchestra and ballet put on a programme with genuinely cheap seats.
