A set of covered outdoor escalators built into the San Javier hillside in 2011, cutting a climb of several hundred steps down to a few minutes and connecting a district that was effectively cut off from the rest of the city. The walls along the route carry a dense, constantly repainted body of graffiti, much of it about the neighbourhood's own history. It is now firmly on the tourist circuit, which has brought stalls, music and crowds. Go with a guide from the barrio itself if you want the history rather than the photographs, and go in the morning before the heat and the queues.
