The concept of establishing an archaeological park along the Appian Way has roots going back to the Napoleonic era. Restoration efforts began with Antonio Canova in the early 1800s, followed by more work under Pope Pius IX. After Italy’s unification, the development of an archaeological path from central Rome to the southeast was pursued, but it only extended to the Baths of Caracalla. In 1931, a plan was proposed to create a grand park along the Appian Way, but post-war construction posed a threat. The park was officially established in 1988 and expanded in 2002 with the acquisition of the Tor Marancia area. Today, 95% of the park is privately owned, with significant portions held by aristocratic Roman families, companies, small landowners, and the Catholic Church.
