Domus Aurea in Rome is an intriguing archaeological site that reveals the remains of Emperor Nero’s lavish palace, constructed after the Great Fire of Rome in 64 AD. It offers a unique insight into Roman history and architecture.
Nero’s palace was intended to outshine all previous palaces with its opulent use of marble, ivory, and gold. Unfortunately, it remained incomplete at the time of Nero’s death, and later emperors dismantled parts of it to erase his legacy.
To visit Domus Aurea, take the metro to the Colosseo station, just a 5-minute walk away. Buses and trams are also available, but the metro is the most convenient.
Some standout features include the impressive architecture, original Roman paintings, and ornate ceilings. Visitors can also enjoy a virtual reality tour to see the palace as it once was.
Tickets should be booked in advance, with prices between €11 and €15, depending on age. The standard ticket includes a guided tour and a VR experience. Children under six can enter for free but still need a booking.
