The art museum occupies the former Augustinian monastery, and the two-storey cloister is the reason to come: carved stone columns, each capital different, caryatid figures on the upper gallery and a dense programme of baroque symbolism worked across the whole courtyard. The collection runs to colonial-era painting from the sixteenth century onward with some nineteenth-century and contemporary Mexican work. Even if colonial religious painting is not your subject, the building is.
